WHAT: Lasting Legacies: A Tribute to the Chicano Art Movement
LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes salutes Pacific Standard Time and the birth of the L.A. art scene, 1945-1980, and the Chicano artists who shaped the city and its art. LA Plaza will offer free cultural activities and music inspired by the Chicano art movement of the ‘60s and ‘70s.
In addition, an art exhibit will feature works by some of the Chicano art pioneers: Carlos Almaraz, Michael Amescua, Judy Baca, David Botello, Barbara Carrasco, Oscar Castillo, Harry Gamboa, Jr., Joe Gonzalez, Roberto Gutierrez, Wayne Healy, Judithe Hernandez, Willie Herron, Gilbert “Magu” Lujan, George Rodriguez, Joe D. Rodriguez and Linda Vallejo. Some artists and their friends will give voice to the impact of the Chicano art movement on the history of Los Angeles in LA Plaza’s inaugural exhibition, “LA Starts Here!"

· Conversation with the Artists: “Emerging Chicano/Identities: Los Angeles in the ‘60s and ‘70s.” California State University Northridge Professor Dr. Margarita Nieto will lead the conversation with Judithe Hernández, John Valadez, Linda Vallejo, and Wayne Healy about the central role these artists played in the Chicano movement and in the history of Los Angeles.
